Books you need to read because they will help you understand Dad!
Which means you’ll understand Life, the World and all the other things that happen to you.
Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain – I don’t mean the cleaned up and politically correct versions. Go to an used book store and pick up a copy from fifty years ago. The older the better, there is nothing more cool than reading an old worn out book passed down from who knows where? The way the binding is cracked and floppy; with the old page smell, its like holding history in your hands!
The point of reading these books is to get your mind thinking about a different time. A time when there was nothing to do but use your mind to pass time and do things. What I want you to get is that there were no movies, TVs or video games of any kind. It was mind power and imagination and how you talk to people. Forget the bad stuff and focus on the good stuff. You will have a whole new understanding and appreciation for the times we live in now.
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – I don’t mean watch the movies and pretend that you read the books. But you can listen to the music by Howard Shore as you read it. That would work really well. Don’t come back until you can say you know who Tom Bombadil is!
Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle – Get the whole set and go from beginning to end. My favorite Quote “That when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe – Written so long ago you are passing through centuries to get at what really matters. It is not what you would call a quick or easy read. It will be real work for some to read it, but it is worth it. This book is a necessity if you are ever going to figure anything out on your own.
Our Sacred Honor by W.J. Bennett – The Spirit of America – (Moral Compass and Book of Virtues) This book is compiled from Stories, Letters, Poems and Speeches of the Founders of Our Country.
Without educated citizens, said James Madison, “Popular government is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both.”
Popular government – that is government by consent – was not, in the view of the Founders, enough; INFORMED consent was what the American republic would need. Our political institutions were designed, of course, to take into account human depravity and self-interest. But, as dynamic and flexible as these institutions were, the Founders believed that more was needed. As I have said before, their hope was to raise up men – to improve not just material condition of men but men themselves.
The institutions of American democracy presuppose a virtuous and knowledgeable citizenry: “We, the people” should be enlightened and virtuous enough to govern ourselves, or at least select responsible and enlightened political officials to govern us. Schools and homes were the places in which we would learn of our civic responsibilities. Here we would be taught to temper our selfishness, respect the nation’s laws, and become better human beings.
My Thoughts… The great majority of the Founding Fathers knew what would happen when the people turned away from education, Church and Family. The Country would crumble, as we can so plainly see today. Everywhere you look there is a selfishness, a “me first” attitude that each person above others. People don’t care about anything but themselves. Think about how it was when you were young; how many selfish acts did you observe through out the day? My guess is that if it was like my time, not to many.
The Point being, I do not want myself and my family to be like this – a part of the problem, of what has happened to America today.
As the scriptures say ‘we are of this world but we are not part of the world’ – John 17:14-16
There are many items worth reading from this book, Stories about Washington, letters between family members – encouraging each other, husbands, wives, sons and friends. Articles posted in newspapers and readers of the times, by Franklin and Jefferson. All from our founding fathers, people that we need to rediscover, learn about and put back in place as examples and leaders.
I will post more from this book (and others) with more of my thoughts but I encourage you to get the book and read it for yourself – Our Sacred Honor.
